Weather Affects Oklahoma Highways

Highways are impacted by freezing precipitation in many areas of the state

Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews in many areas of the state are treating slick areas on bridges and overpasses and continue to work with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and local law enforcement to monitor highway conditions.

Crews are reporting light accumulation of snow on highways from the Panhandle to the Woodward area and continue clearing and treating operations in this area. Isolated slick spots are also reported in far western Oklahoma.

Light snow and windy conditions are reported in northern and central Oklahoma as crews continue to monitor highways. Though roadways were clear of accumulation in these areas as of Saturday afternoon, you should use extra caution and reduce your speed as slick spots can develop due to freezing temperatures.

In east-central, eastern and northeastern Oklahoma crews are treating slick spots on bridges and overpasses as light freezing mist continues. Drivers in these areas should reduce their speed and be alert to black ice.

REMEMBER during snowy and icy conditions, motorists are asked to:
• Stay at least 200 feet behind road clearing equipment; crews need room to maneuver and can engage plowing or spreading materials without notice.
• Allow extra space between vehicles to provide adequate distance for braking.
• Be aware of "black ice," which looks wet on the roadway but is a thin layer of ice.
• Be patient, plan trips ahead and allow extra time in reaching destinations.
