Big Brothers Big Sisters of Bartlesville is looking for mentors to serve youth in our local community. Area Director Charlene Dew mentions that they strive to build healthy relationships between their mentors and students.

She says the staff in Bartlesville does an excellent job making matches last because they won't eveyone to be on the right path immediatelty. The staff talks to the parents, the child and the mentor in their first year together to monitor the progress in the relationship. Dew says they do that to ensure that the relationship grows and is healthy.

Dew says if you are interested in becoming a mentor, you will have to fill out an application. She says they also do background checks on all their mentors. Lastly, she says they will ask you to come into their offices for an extensive interview. The purpose of the interview, Dew says, is to understand who you are and why you want to be a mentor.

That process will help them match your personality with a child that could use you. Dew says they also base matches off of common interests, the child's needs and the mentor's life experiences.

Dew says that they ask their mentors to serve for a year unless they become an on-site mentor at a local school. Those volunteers will only meet when school is in session, but Dew does mention that they try to put on one event in the summer where on-site mentors and their students can reconnect. Most volunteers are asked to be free from 3 to 4 p.m.

If you would like to volunteer to become a mentor, Dew asks that you give them a call. Ther number to call is 918.336.5437. You can also go to their offices located at 320 SE Delaware Ave. Suite 7.
