South Coffeyville Man Charged in January Assault Incident

A South Coffeyville man appeared at the Washington County Courthouse on Thursday facing charges for an early January incident in which he allegedly struck an elderly man at Bartlesville’s Walmart. Matthew Sturgeon is being charged with aggravated assault after being convicted of two or more felonies.

According to an affidavit, On January 4, an officer responded to Walmart after a report of an alleged assault. Two witnesses stated that they observed Sturgeon drop off a female in front of the store. Sturgeon then proceeded to get out of the vehicle to punch a 66-year-old man in the back of the head. Sturgeon then fled the scene in his truck.

The woman who Sturgeon dropped off said she heard Sturgeon yelling but she did not realize what he did. Police apprehended a still image from Walmart security cameras to verify the witness statements. The victim had a large bump on his head. He was seen throwing up and did not remember how he got to the store.

Sturgeon was found guilty in a 2012 incident in which he assaulted a police officer. Also, in 2016 he pleaded guilty on domestic abuse incident. Sturgeon’s bond was set at $20,000 with a condition of no contact with the alleged victim. He is due back in court on March 1.
