Sales Tax Rate to Reach Dewey City Council Tuesday

The Dewey City Council will discuss and possibly take action Tuesday to determine a price amount to present to voters to increase the city's sales tax rate. The increased sales tax rate is an effort to add more money into the City of Dewey's General Fund.

City Manager Kevin Trease said in January that the sales tax rate generates an average of $60,000 a month. However, he added that a third of that averages does not go to the general fund. He says the Dewey Police Department is hit hardest by this fact considering they are paid personnel. The DPD is 3 officers short compared to thier average for officers in the past. This has happened in conjunction with the lower sales tax rate that has been lingering for years, Trease says.

A third of the revenue from the 3-percent sales tax rate in Dewey goes towards a Capital Improvement Fund. Voters in 2015 approved the 1-percent capital improvement and it will resurface again in 2025. Trease says the last time residents voted to increase the sales tax rate in Dewey was in 1976. During the public comment a month ago on the possibility of raising the sales tax rate in Dewey, citizens opposed the idea because businesses have been closing and thought the idea didn't make sense at the moment.

In other business, the Dewey City Council will recognize Bob Burke for his years of service. Trease will also give a sales tax report. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. in City Hall.
