The Washington County Commissioners considered a resolution to call a special election concerning the sales of alcoholic beverages on Sundays by retail spirit licensees.

Commissioner Mike Dunlap read the resolution and explained his thought process as to why the election should be called. He said it gives the voters a chance to state if they deem it fair that if alcoholic establishments have the opportuinty the sell on Sundays, what stores will be able to sell alcohol as well.

The resolution that was read says that the the Washington County Commissioners "deemed it necessary and advisable... to promote equity in the retail sales of alcoholic beverages." It also says, "the power is granted said County by Title 37A, Oklahoma Statutes 2018, Section 3-124(B)), upon a majority of the registered voters thereof voting at an election duly held for such purposes to approve sales of alcoholic beverages on Sundays by retial spirits licensees."

The Washington County Commissioners approved the resolution for the special election to be held on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2020. Voters will be asked if alcoholic beverages should be sold on Sundays by retail spirit licensees within Washington County.

A simple "yes" or "no" to the proposition will be given to registered voters in the county. Polls will be opened at 7:00 a.m. on the given date and they will remain open until 7:00 p.m.

The number and location of the polling places for said election shall be the same as the regular precinct polling places as designated for statewide and county elections by the Washington County Election Board.
