Jason Sport is no longer the head football coach at Bartlesville High School.

Sport has resigned his post as Bruin head football coach and as BHS assistant athletic director effective immediately.

The news was released by Bartlesville Public Schools early on Friday afternoon. Sport had been with the BHS football program for four years, acting as head coach for the previous three seasons.

Bartlesville High Athletic and Activities Director Thad Dilbeck thanked Sport for his time at BHS.

Sport compiled an 8-23 record during his three years as head coach. The Bruins made the playoffs in 2020 because of an expansion of the field by the OSSAA – falling to Putnam City North 31-6.

Sport was hired as head coach after serving as the Bruin’s defensive coordinator for the 2018 season under former skipper Lee Blankenship. Blankenship left after one season in Bartlesville for the head job at Mustang, where he still resides.

Dilbeck says he thinks Bartlesville can compete at the top of 6A-II.

BHS has not finished in the top-four of its district since its historic 2015 season, where Bartlesville lost in the 6A-II semifinals to eventual state champion Bixby.

Sport released this statement with the news:

Being the Head Coach of your Bartlesville Bruins has been the privilege of a lifetime. I can't express my appreciation enough to Chuck McCauley, LaDonna Chancellor, Thad Dilbeck, and the Bartlesville School Board for the opportunity to represent this fine organization. It truly has been my family. My wife Ruth and I will forever be grateful for every single person in this organization who made our lives better and fuller. I will miss so many things, but none more than the young men in the locker room. It was an honor to fight shoulder-to-shoulder with you and be a part of your lives both on and off the field. Finally, to the wonderful people of Bartlesville and Bruin fans everywhere. I can't thank you enough for making this Bama boy feel right at home. I know there are great things ahead for this team, this town, and I'll continue to root like heck for the Bruins, and for you. I hope I represented your team with the grace and the character you all deserve. Fight On!
