It was a heartbreaking evening for the Pawhuska, as both teams fell to the hands of Preston in the first round of the regional tournament. The girls lost 47-44 and the boys lost 53-51 in overtime.

Trailing by three with 30 seconds to go in overtime, Pawhuska’s Chandler Moen stole the inbounds pass and found Conner Easley for a three-pointer, but he missed. Mason Gilkey was there for the rebound and Moen had a second look from three-point range, but he couldn’t get it to fall either. After getting fouled, the Pirates went to the line and made both free throws.

The Huskies got off to a slow start, as Trenton Miles scored the only two points of the first quarter. The Huskies offense came to life in the second quarter and they trailed 21-15 going into halftime.

Preston kept the Huskies at arms length throughout the third quarter, but a Gilkey three-pointer to open the fourth quarter trimmed the lead to three. A bucket from Dalton Hurd gave the Huskies a brief lead with two minutes left, but free throws at the other end tied it and the two teams went to overtime tied at 41.

Foul trouble played a major role in Saturday’s loss for the Lady Huskies, as Mya Curry fouled out midway through the fourth quarter and Jordan Nelson had to sit on the bench for nearly half the game with foul issues.

Preston had the ball and held a one-point lead when Adrianne Wilson was fouled with 15 seconds left. She went to the line and made both. After calling a timeout, the Lady Huskies were unable to get a shot off.

It was a close game throughout, as the Lady Pirates never led by more than seven. Preston held a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and that lead was extended to six at halftime.

The Lady Huskies went 6 of 6 from the foul line in the third quarter to stay within striking distance heading into the final frame, but Preston proved to be too much.

Both teams will take on Central Sallisaw on Monday. The girls will tip at 1:30 with the boys to follow on 99.1 FM KPGM and audio available at KPGMTV.com.
