KANE COLUMN: Passing FY26 Budget Bills

It was a long week at the State Capitol as we considered the dozens of bills that comprise our state budget on the House floor. With that work done, we've now officially passed the Fiscal Year 2026 budget.
As Vice Chair of the House Appropriations & Budget Committee, I’m proud of the work we’ve done to write a responsible budget that supports key services while protecting taxpayers. Budgeting is about priorities, and this year, we made sure Oklahoma’s families, schools and economy come first.
Our state's financial position is strong, and we intend to keep it that way. This year’s budget maintains billions in our Rainy Day Fund. By prioritizing our long-term stability now, future generations won't be burdened by today’s decisions.
Education remains our largest investment, and rightfully so. We’ve increased funding for public schools and ensured teacher pay remains competitive. Our students and teachers deserve the tools to succeed, and this budget keeps that commitment.
Whether you live in an urban, suburban or rural area, infrastructure matters. The FY26 budget continues investments in the roads, bridges and water systems that support business, farming and tourism.
Crafting the state budget is no small task. It requires input from legislators, agencies and Oklahomans across the state. I’m grateful for the collaboration across both chambers and the Governor’s office that made this budget possible. While we don’t all agree on every line item, we worked together to find common ground and deliver results.
This budget reflects Oklahoma’s values: fiscal responsibility, opportunity, education and safety. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished, and I’ll keep working to ensure your tax dollars are used wisely.
In the midst of a busy week, I was so glad to welcome my grandson Tripp to the State Capitol on Wednesday! He sat on the House floor with me for a few bills and even borrowed my desk microphone to say hi to the other members and staff. It's always great hosting constituents at the House, but it's especially fun when my grandkids get the chance to stop by.
We have one more week left before our May 30 sine die adjournment. During the next few days, we'll finish passing amended bills and will override any vetoes we see necessary.
As always, I welcome your feedback and questions. Feel free to contact me at (405) 557-7358 or by email at john.kane@okhouse.gov. Thank you for the opportunity to serve House District 11!
Rep. John Kane, a Republican, serves House District 11 in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, which covers Tulsa and Washington counties.
