Oklahoma Union High School Senior Reegan Riley has been named the ConocoPhillips STEM Student of the Month for March.
Riley said a fascination with space at a young age sparked a lasting interest in STEM fields, an enthusiasm further encouraged by teachers who helped shape that passion.
“I absolutely adored my science teachers,” Riley said. “They are a part of the reason why I have such a passion for it.”
Although not currently enrolled in a science course due to scheduling conflicts, Riley is continuing academic studies through concurrent classes at Coffeyville Community College, where the current focus is on a liberal arts degree path.
Looking ahead, Riley is considering a future in horticulture, combining scientific knowledge with a personal interest in plants. Potential career goals include cultivating and improving plant growth, a field that can involve biology, environmental science and agricultural technology.
Riley has also considered pursuing astrophysics at University of Oklahoma, reflecting a continued interest in space science.
“I have heavily contemplated going … and studying astrophysics,” Riley said.
Riley said being selected for the award is both an honor and a surprise.
“I feel honored, especially because there’s so many other kids that deserve it just as much as I do,” Riley said. “It makes me very happy that my teachers and counselors have recognized me.”
Riley and several other outstanding high school seniors will be recognized during the Night of Scholars and Champions on May 5 at Oklahoma Wesleyan University. The ConocoPhillips STEM Student of the Year will receive a $5,000 scholarship.
