A Payne County resident tested positive this month for a new tick borne illness called Bourbon virus.

The first case of Bourbon virus in the U.S was discovered in Bourbon County, Kansas back in February. The Oklahoma State Department of Health says this is the first case in Oklahoma and because the disease is so new more research is needed to understand it.

State Epidemiologist, Dr. Kristy Bradley spoke about the causes and symptoms of the virus and encourages residents to take precautions when engaging in outdoor activity.

The Payne County resident has made a full recovery. For more information about how to protect yourself from tick borne illnesses visit www.ok.gov/health/
