Bruins Win First Game on Homecoming

Bartlesville High picked up its first win of the season, as the Bruins outplayed Sand Springs to get a homecoming victory 54-34.

BHS (1-5) used a blistering ground game from Laken Clowdus to pick up the win. Clowdus tallied four touchdowns and, unofficially, 256 yards.

Clowdus has accounted for nearly 500-yards rushing over the past two weeks, as Bartlesville has scored 94 combined points in its last two games. This 37-yard score in the fourth quarter ended any doubt in the contest.

The contest started off in familiar fashion for the Bruins. Sand Springs (2-4) scored on trick play, a reverse flea-flicker on the first play of the game gave the Sandites a 73-yard score and a 7-0 lead.

Bartlesville would answer back with a score of its own, Clowdus’ first TD of the game, and then the BHS defense would force Sand Springs three-and-out.

With the ball tied at 7-7, quarterback Ben Winters would be hit as he threw, and the Sandites would intercept a pass and return it for a 62-yard touchdown to retake the lead 14-7.

From that point on, it was all Bruins.

Winters hit Caden Davis on a 53-yard score and a 44-yard touchdown. Seth Long walked it in. Following a Taton Hopkins interception in the final 2-minutes before halftime, Winters found Long through the air to give BHS a 20-point halftime lead.

Bartlesville would never lead by less than 13 in the second half.

There was a fantastic moment after the game, as BHS Athletic Director Spence Rigdon, who has been battling cancer, made an appearance on the field to congratulate the players and coaches on the victory.

Bartlesville will have another tough one up next against Bixby on Thursday.
