2A playoff basketball is here and marquee district playoff matchup will headline Friday night’s action. Typically district playoff battles pair two teams with lopsided records early on, but the matchup between Pawhuska and Caney Valley is the rare exception. The Huskies and are 15-8 and the Trojans are 13-9 on the season.

Caney Valley put together one of its more memorable regular seasons. Daniel Barham a sophomore has begun to tap into his potential as the team’s leading scorer. Veterans Levi Coulter and Cheyton Shepherd have aided the team as well. The Trojans were on the verge of being ranked in the top 20 before losing five of its last six games. Caney Valley head coach Tug Brinker says getting more stops will be a necessity.

Pawhuska’s veteran core pushed the team into the top 20 earlier in the season. The Huskies slid a bit toward the end of the year as well with six losses in their last eight games. Mason Gilkey, Tre Harper and Ty Chinn have been key forces this season. Pawhuska head coach Jake Christenson says he doesn’t want his team to feel the pressure of a winner-take-all game.

The winner of Friday’s contest will take on No. 16 Nowata on Saturday at 8 p.m. The game will be played in Nowata as well. Radio coverage can be heard on Sportstalk 99.1 FM KGPM.
