While labor strife and virus concerns continue to hold up Major League Baseball’s season, we look back at one of the best St. Louis Cardinals to ever do it. The man who needed no bullpen—Bob Gibson pitched 11 innings on this day, May 29, 1967 in a 2-1 victory over Cincinnati. He struck out 11 Reds that day.

Gibson threw ten complete games in 1967, which was a low year for him. He went the distance 255 times in his 17-year career, an average of 17 complete games per season. For comparison sake, the active leader in the MLB currently is Justin Verlander who has thrown 26 complete games in his career.

Gibson would also toss three complete game victories in the 1967 World Series alone. The right-hander from Omaha would log 27 innings, while allowing just three runs and striking out 26 Red Sox hitters. Gibson clinched the series in game 7 with this strikeout.

Harry Caray had the final call. Gibson was named the series MVP for the second time in his career. Every year of his Hall of Fame career was spent with St. Louis. He was inducted to the hall in 1981.
