It was a long, exciting day of basketball on Saturday at the 25th Annual Caney Valley Tournament. By the end of two champions were decided.

We’ll start off with the girl’s championship which saw No. 10 Caney Valley dismantle Oklahoma Union, 58-23.

The Lady Trojans took a big lead early thanks to their full court pressure defense. Oklahoma Union had trouble advancing the ball into the frontcourt which led to several fastbreak buckets. This breakaway layup from Paige Urquhart set the tone early.

By halftime the Caney Valley lead was stretched to 33-18 and the Lady Trojans didn’t look back from there as they would cruise to take home the trophy. The top scorers for Caney Valley were Chenoa Webb with 17 points and Gavriel Myers had 16.

The Lady Trojans continue their excellent season as they are now 16-1.

On the guy’s side it was a thrilling battle for the trophy. Oklahoma Union pulled it out in the end to win to knock off Barnsdall and win the tournament for the first time. Final score, 65-63.

The game was tight from the start with neither side wanting to take the upper hand early on. Both teams traded punches in the first half and went to halftime tied at 32. Barnsdall’s Michael Marin had 15 first half points.

Oklahoma Union’s perimeter pressure created problems for the Panthers all day but it didn’t stop Christian Warford who had 31 points in the game.

Oklahoma Union benefitted from a balanced attacked with Jace Hollingshead carrying a bulk of the scoring load going into the final minutes.

With the Panthers trailing by two Warford got a big layup to knot the game at 63 with under a minute to play.

Barnsdall got the ball back after the Cougars missed a free throw. A missed shot from the Panthers resulted in an offensive rebound by Braden Kelley who was whistled for travel in the paint. Kelley got called for technical after throwing the ball away in disgust.

Dally Ellis knocked down the two technical shots to give the Cougars the title.
