Doenges Ford Indians Hold Tryouts

Amateur athletics made a return of sorts on Friday as Bartlesville’s Doenges Ford Indians held tryouts at the Oklahoma Wesleyan practice field. Athletes from Bartlesville, Dewey, Nowata, Caney Valley, Wesleyan Christian and Copan among other schools compete for shot at the roster.

Day one of the tryouts consisted mostly of drill work such as running, throwing and groundballs. Saturday will see a scrimmage before the roster is selected. Indians manager John Pannell talks about being out on the field once again.

The Indians are still not permitted to use Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium. However, the summer season consists of a lot of road games and out-of-town tournaments anyway. Pannell says the decision from Bartlesville Public Schools revolves around all facets of athletics and not just the downtown stadium. Pannell says the OKWU field is the where home games will be played unless the situation changes.

The Indians are tentatively set to open the season at Fort Smith, Arkansas on June 6. A full summer schedule has not been finalized yet.
