Doggers Come Back to Beat Kiefer; One Win Away from Playoffs

The Dewey Bulldoggers are now just one win away from sealing a playoff spot after earning a come-from-behind victory over Kiefer, 44-28, on Thursday night. Things started poorly for the Doggers. Each of the first two series resulted in failed fourth down conversions followed by long Kiefer touchdowns.

Down 14-0, Dewey would march down the field and quarterback Kale Carner would fight his way into the endzone. Kiefer would then respond with another score to make it 21-6. Five minutes later, after a long methodical drive, Carner would score once again.

Just before halftime Dewey would take the lead on another unreal run from Colby Henley for his weekly check-in in the endzone. Henley weaved through the defense for a 64-yard score. The score was Henley’s sixth rushing touchdown in 2019. The Doggers took the lead 22-21 at halftime.

The third quarter saw the defenses trade stops early on. Then Dewey made another highlight reel play with Hayden Thornton blocking a punt. Carner would then make it three with another short rushing TD to put the Doggers up 30-21 at the end of three quarters.

The second half saw the Doggers control the clock to bleed out the game. Carner would score once more for his 25th total touchdown of the season. Thornton would add a score on a jet sweep play in the final minute as well.

The ground game was fruitful for the Doggers with 390 yards and six touchdowns. Henley toted the ball 25 times for 230 yards. Carner finished with 34 carries for 155 yards and four touchdowns. Carner struggled throwing the ball early and the Doggers ultimately ditched the passing game after just one completion on the night.

After early struggles, the Dewey defense went over 30 game minutes without allowing the Trojans to score a point.

Dewey is now 5-2, 3-1 on the season. Dewey needs just one win to clinch a playoff spot and is likely in the driver’s seat for third spot in 2A-3 behind Sperry and Beggs. The Doggers host Caney Valley next Friday.
