After a deep playoff run last year, Oklahoma Union basketball has picked up right where it left off. The Cougars are 5-0 heading into an intriguing matchup with Oologah on Thursday night in the semifinals of Nowata’s Ty Hewitt Tournament. The Cougars closest game so far was a 39-point victory over 3A Kiefer last week.

OKU currently has five players averaging double-figures in the first chunk of the season. The Cougars knocked off Fairland, 76-19 in the opening round of the tournament. OKU head coach Lee Ott says the 4A Mustangs will represent a nice challenge.

In the other semifinal, Coffeyville pairs up with Mannford, the two-time defending champions of the Hewitt Tournament. The Pirates defeated OKU in the 2018 title game.

It will be a Cougar basketball doubleheader on Thursday at Nowata. The Lady Cougars will play Commerce at 7 p.m. in the semifinals and the boys’ team plays Oologah at 8:30 p.m.
