The Nowata Ironmen earned their first win in the Ty Hewitt Memorial Tournament. Nowata used stifling defense to knock off Commerce, 50-25 in consolation bracket play.

Nowata jumped out to an 8-0 lead early on. However, Commerce would hang with the Ironmen for much of the opening half as shots weren’t going in for either side. Trenton smith and Mark Price peppered in some three-pointers in the first half in a defensive struggle.

The defense made up for the offensivewoes. This tremendous block from Dillon Barnes was a tone-setter in the second quarter.

Nowata led 27-19 at halftime.

The Ironmen saw slight improvements offensively in the second half, but the defense took it to another level. Commerce scored just six points in the entire half, including just one in the fourth quarter. The Tigers didn’t tally a point in the final five minutes of the game.

Price led the team with 17 points. Barnes added in 10 points as well. Nowata will play Fairland for fifth place in the tournament on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. Radio coverage can be heard on KRIG 104.9 FM.
