OKWU Baseball Ready for Opening Day

The heart of basketball season is upon with postseason play just a few weeks away for several local high schools and colleges. However, baseball will be coming upon very soon with Oklahoma Wesleyan slated to open its season this weekend with a three-game series at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas.

The Eagles are led by head coach Kirk Kelley, who returns for his second stint as OKWU head coach. Kelley was the head coach in 2011 and 2012 seasons. Matt Parker, who previously coached the Eagles left for Eastern Oklahoma State College, the job previously held by Kelley.

Kelley is excited to take over a team high such a high level of talent. The Eagles were ranked as the No. 5 in Perfect Game’s preseason rankings. OKWU is coming off a 53-8 record and an appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. Kelley says he isn’t concerned with expectations heading into the season.

The Eagles return of bevvy of pitching talent including Tyson Cronin and Ryan Sandifer who led the rotation last season. The duo combined for 20 wins in 180 innings pitched on the year. Kelley says it’s a luxury to return so much talent on the mound.

Relief ace Landon Williams, who saved seven games last season returns as well. First pitch for the Eagles season is set for 2 p.m. on Friday. We’ll have more coverage of Oklahoma Wesleyan’s opening series as the weekend continues.
