Oklahoma Wesleyan basketball saw a split night in a home doubleheader against Avila University on Saturday night at the Mueller Sports Center. The Eagle men were victorious in blowout fashion while the Lady Eagles were bested.

In the first game the Wesleyan women’s side lost 84-76 to Avila. The Lady Eagles top 10 three-point defense was put to the test as Avila shot 69% percent from distance to earn the victory. Essence Tolson had a career night with 22 points and 14 rebounds to help the Lady Eagles stay in it.

OKWU trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half and reduced the lead to four points in the final two minutes. Avila’s outside shooting prowess was too much to overcome. OKWU is now 12-9 on the season and 8-8 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.

It was a different story for the No. 16 Eagles who blew out Avila, 101-74. It was near triple-double for Lance Tipton who finished with 15 points, 12 rebound and nine assists. The Eagles shot 61% from the floor in the victory.

Wesleyan jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game. Avila made it 27-22 by the 10-minute mark but OKWU would pour it on from there. The Eagles would score 30 points over the final ten minutes to lead 57-35 at the break.

OKWU led by as many as 34 points in the second half and several bench players saw big minutes. Kaleb Stokes led the Eagles with 19 points. Four other OKWU players had at least ten points as well.

The Eagles move to 17-5 on the season and 12-4 in conference. OKWU trails Ottawa by one game in the KCAC standings.

Both teams are off until Wednesday’s road trip to Sterling.
