The University of Oklahoma athletic department announced on Tuesday that it intends to open its facilities for voluntary football workouts on July 1. This comes on the heels of the Big 12 giving its institutions a June 15 date as the earliest day activities could resume. This will give the Sooners roughly eight weeks to prepare for the season opener against Missouri State on September 5.

OU head coach Lincoln Riley recently spoke with skepticism about athletes returning to campus. Riley said the team will handle the situation with “extreme care”. Riley also stated that July 1 was the latest possible date that he felt the team could start training to get prepared for the season.

Oklahoma State has yet to make an announcement on its possible return to athletics. The University of Tulsa previously stated that it would allow athletes to return no earlier than July 6.
