Bartlesville football nearly pulled off a major upset on Friday night, but a Bruin lead ran out of gas in the second half.

Despite a sterling effort from BHS, Sapulpa held on for a 55-40 win over Bartlesville in the Bruin’s second district game of the season.

The BHS offense came alive in the first half, with 372 yards and five scores. Bartlesville struck for its fourth score on this 80-yard Laken Clowdus scamper.

Clowdus unofficially finished with 251 yards on the ground and three touchdowns.

Bartlesville jumped out to a 34-21 lead midway through the second quarter, and even had the ball with that 13-point lead just before halftime. The Bruins could not pour dirt on Sapulpa, however, as 21 unanswered Chieftain points in the second and third quarters gave Sapulpa a 42-34 lead in the fourth.

BHS would get a long pass to Shane Simpson, with another subsequent Clowdus score to get within 42-40 with 7:44 remaining in the game, but would fail on a two-point conversion.

Sapulpa would tack on two more touchdowns in the final 3:30 and end up with the 15-point win.

BHS would turn the ball over twice trying to mount its comeback in the final minutes. Bartlesville ended with 586 total yards of offense. Quarterback Ben Winters had his best game of the season, going 19-32 for 311 yards and two touchdowns. Simpson and Caleb Perry each had a catch for a score.

The Bruins drop to 0-5, and will next host Sand Springs for homecoming.
