Sapulpa Outlasts Bruins in Shootout

It was a track meet, but inside of the track, at Custer Stadium on Friday night.

Sapulpa would outlast Bartlesville 63-58 to pick up the district victory and spoil a tremendous effort from the Bartlesville (1-4) offense on homecoming.

Both teams struggled with tackling, in a game that tallied nearly 1,400 yards of offense combined between the two teams.

The game was also evenly matched, with both teams punting only once. Sapulpa had two turnovers to Bartlesville’s one.

Even after scoring eight touchdowns on offense, it was defense that nearly won the game for the Bruins. Bartlesville recovered a fumble down by five points late in the fourth quarter, and had the ball with a chance to retake the lead.

Bartlesville would drive into Sapulpa (4-1) territory, but was unable to convert a fourth down and two conversion once the drive stalled. Sapulpa would get the ball back and run out the clock.

Tailback DeAndre Young had 23 carries for 282 yards and four touchdowns. He came out of the game in the third quarter with a right ankle sprain and did not return.

Laken Clowdus had a career night as his backup with 23 carries for 201 yards and two touchdowns. Ben Winters had a career night, going 17-26 for 166 yards and two touchdowns passing the football. He also had 36 yards rushing. All career highs for the junior in his third varsity start.

Bartlesville is next at Sand Springs to continue district play.
