The high school basketball playoffs got underway last weekend for several area schools. A few schools find themselves with no breathing room after losing their playoff openers.

Caney Valley dropped its opener to Pioneer-Pleasant Vale, 62-50, in a district game played at home. Caney Valley will play its regional games at Pioneer-Pleasant Vale, which is near Enid. The Trojans play Mooreland the regional consolation bracket on Thursday.

Nowata also lost a home game in districts to Ketchum, 51-39. The Ironmen have the benefit of playing at home in the regional consolation bracket. The Ironmen will likely draw Colcord in its next matchup, which will be played on Thursday at 3 p.m. The opening loss could play a slight benefit for the Ironmen who could avoid playing fifth-ranked Oklahoma Union. It would take three straight wins in the consolation bracket, but the Ironmen do a have reasonable chance to move forward to the area tournament for the second consecutive year.

Dewey was blown out the in the 3A district playoffs on Friday, losing to Kellyville, 72-36. The Doggers will play Adair for the fourth time this season in the consolation bracket of the Kellyville regional. Dewey has one win in three previous tries against the Warriors. That game slated for 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Other area schools including Pawhuska, Wesleyan Christian and Copan have seen their season’s ends.
