Wesleyan Baseball Player Gets Massive Honor

 

Oklahoma Wesleyan baseball has moved up its weekend series against Avila University because of the possible rain on Saturday.

The Eagles will now host Avila Thursday and Friday, with a single game on Thursday evening at 6:00, then a double-header starting at 2:00 on Friday - All games at Bill Doenges Memorial Stadium. 

Wesleyan has won two games in a row in decisive fashion, most recently over the No. 5 team in the country, Oklahoma City University earlier this week.

The Eagles got some colossal off-the-field news on Wednesday. Wesleyan's main offensive threat in 2019, Eagle senior Austin Sojkia, was named to the mid-season award watch list for the Golden Spikes Award, which is given to the best amateur baseball player in the country by USA Baseball.

Sojka is the only NAIA player on the list, which includes two high schoolers and 37 NCAA Division 1 baseball players. In the 42-year history of the award, only two non-NCAA DI baseball players have won it.

The midseason watch list features 40 of the nation's top amateur players from the high school and college ranks. The Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will continue to maintain a rolling list of athletes, allowing players to play themselves into consideration for the award before announcing the semifinalists on May 15.

Sojka is hitting .489 with 15 doubles and 13 home runs in 37 games. He is slugging .910 and has an OPS of 1.497.
