The suspected shooter in Sunday's shooting, near the intersection of Virginia Avenue and Herrick Street has been found and questioned by Washington County Deputies.
The shooting took place on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at about 1:15 pm5/19/24, in the area of Herrick and Virginia Ave, near the city limits of Bartlesville. A Bartlesville Police Department officer was flagged down in the area and was told there had been what sounded like two gunshots being fired near the intersection of Herrick and Virginia Ave.
WCSO Deputies arrived and learned a male in his mid-50’s was injured and was being treated by Bartlesville EMS paramedics. The male was transported to a local area hospital where he remains in critical but stable condition.
Deputies and Officers learned the shooter was approximately 16 years old and had fled the area on foot. BPD K9 officers and drones were used during the search however; the 16-year-old male was not located. WCSO Investigators interviewed several people at the Sheriff’s Office. The gun, allegedly used, was located and taken as evidence.
At approximately 5 pm on Sunday, WCSO Deputies learned of a possible location for the 16-year-old male and were able to detain him for questioning. WCSO Investigators met with the juvenile and their parent at the Sheriff’s Office.
After discussion with the District Attorney’s Office and given the information available, the juvenile was released to their parent. It has been determined the juvenile is a tribal member and the Cherokee Nation has been contacted as this investigation continues. A Cherokee Nation Marshall will be working with WCSO investigators as this investigation moves forward.
The original incident occurred because two juveniles were having a verbal dispute, one of the juveniles being the 16-year-old alleged suspect. At some point, an adult (the victim) intervened and at this point weapons became involved. The shooting took place because of weapons being presented. At this time, no arrests have been made, as no probable cause has been determined. No names are being released at this time and new information may be released in the future.
