OKWU Men Fall to Langston at Paycom
A shorthanded Oklahoma Wesleyan men’s basketball team battled against the No. 8 team in the country but fell to Langston on a big-time stage on Sunday afternoon.
Langston beat OKWU 80-67 in the Paycom Center in downtown Oklahoma City. The Eagles spent most of the afternoon trailing, but had moments where it looked like they may take control.
A run at the end of the first half was the best stretch of the game for Wesleyan. This three from Yashi McKenzie gave the Eagles some hope with a few minutes left until half.
OKWU shot 52.5 percent in the first half but only shot 24.3 in the second. Compare that to the Lions, who shot 61.5 percent in the final 20 minutes.
One of the reasons why, Langston started to solve the Wesleyan full court press. OKWU forced 10 turnovers providing 15 Eagle points in the first. Langston only turned it over five times in the second.
Despite all that, Wesleyan had a seven-point lead early in the second half. That came directly after a DJ Talton Jr. buzzer beater at the break.
OKWU was without starting center Jaden Leitzke and power forward Jaden Wilson due to injury. Both should be back within a few weeks, but it caused issues on the glass. Wesleyan was outrebounded 58-23. A stat that OKWU has owned over Donnie Bostwick’s tenure.
Eagles drop to 9-4 overall and will restart Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday at home against Bethany.
