OSSAA Goes Over HS Rule Differences

 

Week No. 2 of prep football practice is here, as teams are marching toward scrimmages in less than two weeks.

KWON got a chance to attend a rules clinic for high school football broadcasters held by the Greater Tulsa Officials Association on Saturday in Tulsa.

Ethan Rolen, who is the OSSAA Football Mechanics Coordinator, went over changes and points of emphasis this fall within high school football in the state.

High school action does have several notable differences from college and professional football.

A couple obvious ones: There is no automatic first down on defensive holding, a personal foul or defensive pass interference. An unsuccessful field goal outside the 20 results in a touchback if the ball crosses the goal line.

Rolen says there is no “tush push” allowed at the high school football. It is called aiding the runner at this level.

Rolen reminded the group that football needs officials in the fall, otherwise it’s just recess.
