A Night Honoring Joe Gilbert Turns Into Classic Finish

Friday night's game between Pawhuska and Barnsdall was close throughout, as neither team led by more than seven points, but it was the Panthers who ended the game on a 12-4 run to win the game 60-59. Senior Michael Marin scored 10 of the final 12 points for Barnsdall and senior Heath Moles blocked what would have been the game-winning shot at the buzzer. Coach Wade Corder was pleased with the way they performed on senior night.

Moles finished the game with 27 points and Marin added 20. Pawhuska's Matt Miles netted 18 points. Corder says the team will wake up Saturday and begin preparations for its next opponent, Caney Valley, but he admits this one is a little special.

Prior to the game, former Panther players and coaches showed up to honor legendary coach Joe Gilbert. Approximately 100 people were on hand to thank Gilbert for all he had done for them.

Gilbert has been coaching at Barnsdall for 66 years. He has amassed more than 3,900 wins coaching six varsity sports. Gilbert was inducted into the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1981.
