Caney Valley Football Set to Compete in Class-A

Optimism is spreading around the area as the first official football practice date in Oklahoma is set for Monday, August 10. At Caney Valley High School in Ramona things are on the upswing. The Trojans dropped down to Class-A and have a somewhat veteran roster that is poised to improve. Fifth-year head coach Stephen Mitchell is expecting somewhere between 30 and 40 guys on the team this fall.

Caney Valley went winless last year but plenty of underclassmen cut their teeth against some of the top teams in 2A. Sophomore Quarterback Zak Wallis is set to start from day one after playing in 10 games as a true freshman. Wallis found the endzone 10 times last year and totaled just over 2,000 yards. His top targets are expected to be Matthew Whittle and Hayden Wingo who have both been around the program for a long time.

Caney Valley’s drop to Class A-6 will mean tough matchups will the likes of Pawnee, Morrison and Hominy in a seven-team district. The Trojans will open with Hulbert on September 4.
