Several high schools are making decisions about returning to athletics amid the coronavirus pandemic. Caney Valley High School in Ramona opted to allow athletes to return to campus for workouts. However, the Trojans football team will not be permitted to travel for their team camp or passing leagues dates it had originally scheduled. Head coach Stephen Mitchell talks about the plans for summer.

This style of workout will run through the end of June. Mitchell says the school board would not approve the team to travel because of the pandemic. A dead period is still slated to surround the Fourth of July. Mitchell thinks the OSSAA board could vote to remove that at its June 9 meeting though.

On the football side of things Mitchell is excited to see his team in Class A. the last two season Caney Valley went 1-19 against the some of the giants in Class 2A. The Trojans now have the highest ADM in Class A. Mitchell says this should make for good competition every Friday night in the fall.

Caney Valley will look to start practices with full football activities on August 10. We will have more on the Trojans and other area teams’ offseason plans in the days to come.
