Doggers Boast Area's Most Creative Offense

A lot has gone the Bulldoggers way in the early stages of the 2019 season. Under new head coach Trent Turner Dewey switched its offense from a more traditional run-heavy attack to a modern air raid attack. At 3-1, the Doggers are pleased with the results so far. However, a further wrinkle in the offense may have given Dewey the push it needed in its most recent 26-12 win over Victory Christian.

The “Swinging Gate” formation requires the center, quarterback and running back to be in the middle of the field while all four other lineman and skill players line up outside the hash marks. This deceptive formation is typically only used for two-point conversions.

Though Colby Henley both caught and ran a touchdown out of the set in the Doggers regular offense in last Friday’s win. Doggers head coach Trent Turner explains why the concept works.

The swinging gate’s origins are hard to trace but its rise in popularity came with the rise of the spread offense. Former University of Oregon head coach Chip Kelly often ran the scheme with great success in the early 2010s.

Expect to see more ingenuity from Turner and the Dewey offense as the season progresses. The Doggers host Haskell for homecoming on Friday. Radio coverage can be heard on KRIG 104.9 FM.
