The Nowata Ironmen dropped a nail biter in its first round game of the Ty Hewitt Tournament to Coffeyville, 51-49. The Tornadoes hit a couple of big shots late in the game and Dillon Barnes’ layup rimmed out at the buzzer.

Nowata rallied back from being down 12 points early in the second quarter. Coffeyville went on an 11-0 run in the first three minutes of the second quarter to pull ahead 28-16. Nowata would respond with a 17-0 run of its own spanning over the next eight minutes into the third quarter to put it ahead 33-28.

The low-scoring affair would continue to go back-and-forth into the final period. The lead would change several times in the final minutes. Down 51-47 with less than a minute to go, Nowata would get a big bucket from Gabe Velasco.

The Ironmen pressure defense would give Barnes an easy steal and opportunity to tie at the end of the game, but unfortunately the shot would miss. Barnes finished with 13 points. Josiah Clark had 10 points.

Nowata falls to 2-1 overall. The Ironmen will play Chelsea on Friday at 8:30 p.m. in the consolation round semifinals.
