Sport Hires Bruin Defensive Coordinator

Bartlesville High football made some news on Tuesday afternoon, as head coach Jason Sport has tapped Tanner Koons to become the Bruins next defensive coordinator.

Sport was the Bruin DC in 2018 for one season, under previous head coach Lee Blankenship.

Koons comes to Bartlesville after one season as defensive coordinator, strength and conditioning coordinator and linebackers coach at Perry High School. Koons had an immediate impact in 2018, helping Perry finish at 8-2, following a 4-6 season in 2017. Perry won its district this past season, as well.

Prior to 2018 in Perry, Koons was a coach on the defensive side of the ball at the University of Central Oklahoma for seven seasons. He is 26 years old and is a native of Tuttle. Koons played in 42 games for UCO as a linebacker, and tallied 131 career tackles for the Bronchos.

Koons becomes the second major coordinator under Sport, as he promoted Jason Munoz from within the Bartlesville staff to offensive coordinator earlier this offseason. Munoz was already serving as quarterbacks coach and associate head coach.

Bartlesville is about two months away from the start of spring football and nearly has its coaching staff set. Sport said BHS is still searching for an offensive line coach. Bobby Holmes, Prince McJunkins, Robert Clark, Harley Rutherford and Nathan England will all be returners to the staff under Sport.

More on the new Bruin DC is planned for later this week.
